The Pearl District has an extraterrestrial visitor! It’s a colossal, 17-foot robot, here to shine cosmic light into the Pearl. The robot in question, Mechan 42, will be with us for the duration of the Portland Winter Light Festival, and possibly some time after!

The Portland Winter Light Festival is a nonprofit event produced by the Willamette Light Brigade, running from February 2nd-10th. With a decentralized footprint spanning two weekends, 2023 was the 8th year of this annual Festival and featured light-based art installations and pop-up performances throughout Portland. Each year, the festival provides opportunities for dozens of local artists, creates hundreds of beautiful installations across the community, and drives millions into the local economy.

In 2015, The Willamette Light Brigade founded the Portland Winter Light Festival in an effort to propel forward its mission of connecting communities and enriching the public realm through artful lighting. The light-based art and technology event began as a coalescence of ideas in 2016 and continues to be a beloved annual winter event that is presented for free to the public each February and provides significant economic and cultural stimulation to Portland during the darkest time of the year.

You can watch the Portland Winter Light Festival’s excellent video on the creation of the huge robot here. We think Tyler knocked it out of the park! Come visit Mechan 42 on 13th, right by the Blu Dot and the 13th Street Lofts!
