It’s a Big Month for Art!
Biomass
We have to talk about Biomass, the exhibition curated by Jeff Jahn. We’re lucky enough to host the gallery in our very own historic Maddox Building, and we couldn’t host a better collection of work. The exhibition opened Thursday, July 12, in the historic Maddox Building and runs through August 27.
Biomass is a contemporary art showcase exploring themes of feral empathy, cultural animals, and facets of fauna and is a significant milestone for the art scene as the first major warehouse show since the pandemic. The theme came about when noted eco-economist and urbanist Lark Lo Sontag, the inaugural Sadie Alexander Economics Fellow at the New School for Social Research, asked Jeff to curate a show during this week's Animal Behavior Society's international convention.
Biomass is more than an art exhibition, according to Jahn, who believes exhibitions like this one, are catalysts for Portland’s civil and cultural renewal, providing a boost for local artists and small businesses hit hard by the challenges of the past few years. The location of Biomass also holds significance, the historic red brick Maddox Building, built in 1906, sits in the heart of the Pearl District, on NW 13th Ave, home to designers, creatives, and makers - Portland's original creative district. “Artists are Portland's most nimble and effective cultural ecology builders, putting civic energy back into the system.”
