Biomass
"Animals and art go back to the inception of civilization, and that fissure formed the very concept of the wild. Our interactions with animals reveal the best and worst in all species... yet in this time when humans have such difficulty communicating and having empathy for one another, animals provide surprising insights. There is healing, vengeance, projection, rage, love, communion, objective distance, and an encounter with the other and sublime in this exhibition... it has teeth. In a very tangible way, fauna has a way of reminding us humans that it isn't all about us." - Jeff Jahn
We are ecstatic about the Biomass exhibition curated by Jeff Jahn.
Biomass is an amazing showcase of contemporary art that explores the themes of feral empathy, cultural animals, and facets of fauna and is a significant milestone for the art scene as the first major warehouse show since the pandemic. The theme came about when noted eco-economist and urbanist Lark Lo Sontag, the inaugural Sadie Alexander Economics Fellow at the New School for Social Research, asked Jeff to curate a show during this week's Animal Behavior Society's international convention.
Biomass is more than an art exhibition, according to Jahn, who believes exhibitions like this one, are catalysts for Portland’s civil and cultural renewal, providing a boost for local artists and small businesses hit hard by the challenges of the past few years. The location of Biomass also holds significance, the historic red brick Maddox Building, built in 1906, sits in the heart of the Pearl District, on NW 13th Ave, home to designers, creatives, and makers - Portland's original creative district. “Artists are Portland's most nimble and effective cultural ecology builders, putting civic energy back into the system.”
The exhibition opened Thursday, July 12, in the historic Maddox Building and runs through August 27.
