National Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15th to October 15th, 2021
In the US, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15. The federal designation is meant to celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors were of Spanish, Caribbean, Central, or South American descent.
The celebration began in the Johnson administration as National Hispanic Heritage Week and was expanded under Reagan to cover the period between September 15 and October 15 in 1988.
Why September 15? September 15 is when Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua gained independence from Spain. Mexico's Independence Day is on the 16th, and Chile's on the 18th, so all fall within a remarkably short period of time.
This Hispanic Heritage Month, go out, and celebrate history and culture around the city and in your community!
We’ve listed a few Portland organizations, events, and Pearl District restaurants to help you celebrate the month.
Events this Weekend!
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Oregon-based Hispanic winemakers and winery owners will tell their stories, proudly display the diversity of Hispanic cultures (which span most of Latin America and Spain), and give back to Oregon's Spanish-speaking community. Participating wineries Alumbra Cellars, Atticus Wine, Beacon Hill Winery & Vineyard, Cramoisi Vineyard, Parra Wine Co, and Valcan Cellars will offer special wine selections and donate ten percent of ticket and bottle sales to Adelante Mujeres Empresas, a development program that provides instruction for small business owners and supports individuals in pursuit of their dreams.
Portland Mercado's "El Carnaval del Barrio," or neighborhood carnival, will feature a night of music and dance performances, food, vendors, and community. Ten percent of the night's sales will benefit the Latino Student Union at David Douglas High School, which has one of the state's most diverse student bodies.
Engage! Check out Everout Portland, Travel Portland, Latino Network, and El Hispanic News for more events and activities.

1131 NW Hoyt St., Portland, OR 97209
(at the corner of Hoyt and 12th)
Rustic northwest finishes with southern accents and vintage decorations inspire the interior, the long and narrow space making for an intimate, speakeasy sort of feel. The bar is a prominent feature immediately upon entering, spanning the length of the room, an impressive display of spirits against the back wall.
